Communications
The Communications Department at the Life Sciences institute covers media and public relations, the LSI website, Intranet, Newsletter, press releases and events.
Events: Your labs are always involved in LSI events. Check the LSI INTRANET for all LSI related events. Lab members will be invited on a rotating basis to monthly science lunches with a PI, LSI Monthly Colloquia presentations, BLASTS (The best lab event since time!) and various other building wide activities such as the Annual Poster Session, which is held in September concurrent with the LSI Advisory Board/Leadership Council meetings.
We need your information for several publications and the website before you get here or as soon as possible upon your arrival:
Media: Please alert us when you are publishing, attending a conference, win an award or any newsworthy events. We may want to write a press release or put the article, on our website or try to gain coverage in the national or local media. The University of Michigan offers excellent media training. You are highly encouraged to attend a training session because LSI is often called for commentary, etc.
Public/donor relations: LSI is a popular place for tours. We make every attempt to protect your time for research, but on occasion, may ask you to give a presentation to a group in the building or outside of the building. Also, tours may go through the building several times a month. We will alert you about these in advance and also post the dates on the INTRANET as well as ALL LSI EVENTS.
Website: New faculty should provide or request a digital picture and provide pictures of their lab members for posting. We can take photos here also. Please provide a placeholder graphic or picture for your opening lab webpage, a research statement and a biography, and any news clippings or multimedia items you would like displayed. See [www.lsi.umich.edu] for examples.
Newsletter: The newsletter is one key avenue of communicating LSI to the University community and stakeholders. Each issue discusses collaboration and we will ask you to regularly inform us of any noteworthy activities in your labs including publishing, earned degrees, conferences, etc for the Currents column.
Other publications: We also produce the LSI media kit/brochure containing individual faculty bios and in depth information about LSI.
Powerpoint slides and talking points: We provide a set of slides that you can amend for your needs for your own presentations and information. We also have standard LSI talking points for you to refer to if you are asked general questions about LSI. They are posted on the Intranet and updated regularly. We will help you with any of your needs for pictures, new slides, or information.
Please always mention that you are a LSI research professor to reporters or media contacts.
